JEE Main: Complete Guide, Eligibility, Syllabus & Exam Pattern

JEE Main is the national-level entrance examination that opens the door to undergraduate engineering, architecture and planning programmes across India — and to JEE Advanced.

What is JEE Main?

JEE Main is a national entrance examination for undergraduate admission to engineering, architecture and planning courses. It is held in multiple sessions during an admission cycle, and candidates may appear in more than one session; the better result is normally considered. Most of the examination is computer-based, with objective questions in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics for the engineering paper. The drawing section of the architecture paper is the usual exception and is attempted on paper.

Who conducts JEE Main?

JEE Main is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), an autonomous testing organisation set up by the Government of India. NTA publishes the information bulletin, runs registration, allots exam centres, releases answer keys and declares results. Every official announcement about JEE Main appears first on the NTA JEE Main website.

Purpose of JEE Main

JEE Main serves two distinct purposes at the same time:

  • Admission. Scores and ranks are used for admission to the NITs, IIITs, Government Funded Technical Institutes and many state and private institutions that accept the JEE Main score.
  • Screening. It decides who is allowed to register for JEE Advanced, the examination used for IIT admission.

The three JEE Main papers

JEE Main Paper 1 — B.E./B.Tech

Paper 1 is the engineering paper and by far the most widely taken. It covers Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, with each subject carrying equal weight. Questions are objective: multiple-choice questions with a single correct option, plus a set of numerical-answer questions where you type in a value. Negative marking applies to the multiple-choice section; the rules for the numerical section have varied between years, so confirm them in the current bulletin. JEE Main Paper 2A — B.Arch

Paper 2A is for candidates seeking admission to Bachelor of Architecture programmes. It has three parts: Mathematics, a general aptitude section, and a drawing test that assesses freehand drawing, proportion, perspective and visual sense. The drawing test is evaluated manually, so this paper is not fully computer-based.

JEE Main Paper 2B — B.Planning

Paper 2B is for Bachelor of Planning programmes. It contains Mathematics, general aptitude and a planning-based section that tests comprehension, basic reasoning and awareness of development and settlement issues. There is no drawing test in this paper.

Who can appear for JEE Main?

In broad terms, JEE Main is open to candidates who have passed the Class 12 or equivalent qualifying examination within the permitted recent years, or who are appearing for it in the current year. Requirements about subject combinations, the year of qualifying examination, the number of consecutive years a candidate may appear, and reservation or category provisions are set out in the information bulletin for each admission cycle. Institutions may also apply their own additional admission criteria on top of the JEE Main score.

How JEE Main relates to NITs, IIITs and other institutions

A JEE Main result by itself does not give you a seat. Admission happens through counselling. Seats at the NITs, IIITs and GFTIs — along with IIT seats filled through JEE Advanced — are allotted centrally by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority through choice filling and multiple rounds of allotment on the JoSAA website. Many state governments and private universities run their own counselling using JEE Main ranks, each with separate registration and deadlines.

JEE Main and JEE Advanced are sequential stages of the same admission route rather than competing exams. Candidates who reach the qualifying level in JEE Main Paper 1 — a number announced each year for each category — become eligible to register for JEE Advanced, subject to the other conditions in the JEE Advanced brochure.
